Google counts 8.5 billion searches every day - and controls what users see and don’t see and what businesses can find their way into the online markets with this power.
The IE.F has been advocating for fair and open digital markets for years. The current non-compliance investigation into Google under the DMA and the recent US government’s antitrust case against Google Search could be pivotal steps in opening up the online search ecosystem that millions rely on daily.
In October 2024, IE.F Managing Director Clark Parsons and Senior Advisor Felix Styma took part in the Knight-Georgetown Institute’s (KGI) workshop on the “Future of Search Competition Workshop” which convened leaders in antitrust and tech policy from academia, civil society, and industry. Alissa Cooper, Jasper van den Boom and Zander A. have now released an insightful report distilling the workshop’s findings into foundational principles for designing effective remedies in the US v. Google case.
With our collective online search experience at stake, the findings of this report are more timely than ever. They show that there is a clear path towards a fair and competitive market.
The report is available on the website of the KGI in English.
