The Sovereign European Cloud API (SECA) - A Leap for European Tech Sovereignty

Antonia Wagner, 05.03.2025

With global hyperscalers benefiting from economies of scale, lock-in effects, and European user data, it is more important than ever to rely on sovereign European alternatives. For years, we have seen top-down initiatives produce almost no results in the marketplace.

This is why it is great to see the Sovereign European Cloud API (SECA) initiated by Aruba, IONOS, and Dynamo paving the way for a sovereign EuroStack. The interoperability SECA offers is a much needed boost for an open and sovereign digital infrastructure for Europe. We are especially happy to see the IE.F’s Achim Weiß and Francesco Bonfiglio as two key drivers behind this effort. Congratulations on this great success!

In recent years, the European cloud market has grown significantly and it is predicted to do so even further in the upcoming years. Still, high market concentration and limited interoperability pose a challenge. Here, SECA will be able to bridge the gap and allow for a safe and reliable connection between cloud services.

IE.F Board Member and IONOS CEO Achim Weiß sees SECA as a vital part of a sovereign European digital infrastructure:

"As Europe’s leading digitalization partner, IONOS ensures that businesses and citizens have the digital independence they need to succeed. AI and cloud are key technologies that are not only redefining the global economy but, in light of geopolitical developments, are increasingly becoming a question of European sovereignty. Europe cannot afford to be dependent on external influences. We need a strong and truly sovereign digital ecosystem. SECA is an essential building block for creating a secure, independent, and future-proof digital infrastructure - one that strengthens Europe, keeps it competitive, and safeguards its digital sovereignty."
